I had to think about his question and I came back to him after a few days and told him, I dont think I mean we all struggle with pride in some fashion but I dont think its but then I said, I think what the big danger to me at this stage is, I really have nobody to tell me no, in my life. Any decision in the world that Im living in, store design or as a model, theres nobody to tell me no. And I think that can be a tough thing and maybe a dangerous thing for folks. No. How did you finance the growth? Theyll make your food. Whats the process look like? But they always go do them and make them happen. I call it food with an opinion. And we should be clear, Cracker Barrel, for folks who may be outside the United States. I sent it out to them and said, Hey, if were going to name the company, which of these resonates? Overwhelmingly, Maple Street Biscuit Company came back as the name for the company. Externally we call them team members. Thats where Piper was a value to us. Maybe they be interested in divesting those stores? Wait, wait, yes. But they said, hey I explained to them we were going to market and what our strategy was and they said, Hey, but wed like to talk to you. And we spent 10 months really getting to know each other. I dont know what theyre doing every day, every week. We call them family members internally, its because I tell them, I want them to understand were in this life together. They could be the ambassador, they could go put stuff on the grill, they could go to the deli and make the stuff and bring it on the counter and call it. They got their MBAs and so I got to work with all kinds of those in this turnaround process. And we got to know her and she got to know us and we thought we could go do something. To her, a house is a home is a big deal. They direct stuff. And then, as were going to market, Hypers trying to help us figure that out. With Crackers Barrels resources, Holler & Dash could have invested more money at the biscuit business, but they realized what Maple Street had created was more than just hawking biscuits and building an equal brand would take longer than if they just bought the company. And there was a lot of interest in the Maple Street brand. One mission, four principles. And we have some promises that we make and one of these is, its a safe place. So when I say that its our mission to go help people, the first store was a gentleman I was going to church with and I was just going to set him up. And so, in going through this, one of my objectives was, we have to keep running the business, growing the brand, executing our model, as well as going through this diligence. I said I wanted the last half of my like to have more impact. Weve always been this scrappy startup, looking for every nickel, dime and dollar to go do that next community store. I said, Ill work with you for six months. And if our missions that important. And so we tried it, put it together, it was like perfect. But the journey hasn't been as simple as the. So we came up with a four leadership model that gave us depth and breadth to support a large, a fast growth pattern. The food giant acquired the comfort food restaurant because they were convinced of its strong potential for growth. Its not our go to market strategy. Wed immediately have a growth story. So I had built it on, then we went through the proof of concept as well, those first two stores. Because to me, theres thousands of counselors out there waiting to give you counsel and theyre in books. Im writing this down on a little piece of paper. And so we were going to wait until that transaction happened. One, they have more leaders they can depend on in their store. Were at 30 community stores at the time. I guess if the conversation had came up that itd be something different, I probably would have had some pause. And paid cash for it and Im filling it up. This is not about Scott. Thats not what I wanted to do. Life can be really tough. We talked to Piper, Jeffrey and partnered with them to help us to start the conversations. Good business people earn the right to go do more good. Those things cant go away. Were basically open seven in the morning until two in the afternoon. Then we started looking at, how do we fund the growth and expand the companys stores footprint completely? And so after the transaction, I announced were going to change our model, go to here. So we only had a capacity to do one. But I want to have the right partner as well. So anything that I had was mine. Unbelievable. Level negative one is wait until separated. And then we started looking ourself, whats the best plan to move forward? We did not, because we put When this became serious conversation and we all agreed that they could be a really good strategic partner, we asked Piper, just table those for now. So for us to add this diligence was significant. It was at that moment I knew that there was probably something more. I can tell you, the way I did my analysis on how we could make this work was, I have spent months going to restaurants who are open the same hours we are. I went in and added the sales for the original store, for the first 100 days, San Marco. At what point did the conversation into the nine month quoting process go from you buying their stores, to the opposite. In that process, we did a lot of things right, we did a lot of things wrong. There were some that had been on the Maple Street initially that it was a little bit of a shock. Theres people on our team, a hundred people on our team. But not if youre going to have the porcelain and metal silverware. And I saw its a community stores, why couldnt we? Thats a great story to go tell. By 2018, Johnson had grown Create & Cultivate to eight employees when an acquirer offered her a staggering $40 million. So he came and helped me put the five year plan together and what that looked like. At the same time, you have to pay for it. Opened in 2012, it was the first of 33 locations. It was in turnaround all the time and we kept bringing in these consultants. It started with one pizzeria still located in Whitehall, Ohio and has expanded to 14 stores located in.
